Tracking activities for college applications
Colleges read the activities section closely for homeschool applicants. Logging activities, roles and hours as they happen makes that section easy to fill in senior year.
- Add every activity: sports, music, clubs, co-op classes, jobs, church and volunteer work.
- Record the grades involved, hours per week and weeks per year.
- Note roles and achievements: team captain, a recital, an award, a project you led.
- Update the log each semester while dates and numbers are easy to remember.
Frequently asked questions
How many activities can I list on the Common App?
The Common App has space for up to 10 activities, with short descriptions, plus a separate section for up to 5 honors.
Do jobs and family responsibilities count?
Yes. A part-time job or caring for younger siblings shows responsibility, and applications have space for both.
Should volunteer hours be documented?
Keep a record of dates, hours and a contact person. Some scholarships and programs ask for verified hours.
When should we start logging activities?
In 9th grade. Colleges look at activities from the high school years, and four years are hard to reconstruct from memory.
