How homeschool credits work

  1. Pick a standard for one credit, such as 120 hours, and use it for every course.
  2. A full-year course is usually 1 credit; a one-semester course is usually ½ credit.
  3. Log hours as you go for electives and self-designed courses; it is hard to rebuild later.
  4. Round down to the nearest quarter credit when a course falls short of a full credit.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is one high school credit?

There is no single national rule. Most homeschoolers use 120 to 180 hours of work for one credit; 120 hours is the most common, and 150 to 180 is typical for lab sciences. Pick one standard and use it for every course.

What about a textbook course?

Many families give one credit for finishing most of a high school textbook (about three quarters or more), whatever the hours. Hours are most useful for electives, labs and courses you design yourself.

Does reading and homework count toward hours?

Yes. Count all the time spent on the course: lessons, reading, homework, labs, projects and test prep.

How many credits do homeschoolers need to graduate?

In most states the parent decides. Many families follow a common college-prep plan of 22 to 26 credits over four years.
