Frequently asked questions
What grade should my child be in based on their birthday?
In most US states a child starts kindergarten in the school year in which they turn 5 on or before the cutoff date, most often September 1. Each grade after that adds one year. Enter the birthday above to see the grade for any school year.
Does my state use September 1?
Many states do, but not all, and some leave it to districts. If yours differs, enter your state’s cutoff in "Other date". For homeschoolers the cutoff is mostly a reference: you choose the level your child works at.
How does it work in Canada?
Ontario offers Junior Kindergarten in the calendar year a child turns 4 and Senior Kindergarten the year they turn 5, with a December 31 cutoff. Other provinces start kindergarten at 5 with their own cutoffs, so choose the matching option or enter the date.
Can a homeschooled child be in different grades for different subjects?
Yes, and that is one of the advantages of homeschooling. Use the typical grade for paperwork and records, and teach each subject at the level your child is ready for.
